Significant Tribal Movements in India: Pahariya & Chuar Uprisings
Pahariya’s Rebellion: British Expansion and Tribal Resistance in 1778
The rebellion occurred in 1778 due to British expansion on their territory.
The British declared their territory as a damni-kol area to restore peace.
Chuar Uprising: The Revolt of the Jungle Mahal (1766-1816)
Famine, increased land revenue demands, and economic distress led to the uprising.
Tribespeople were farmers and hunters in the Jungle Mahal of Midnapore and Bankura districts.
The uprising lasted from 1766 to 1772 and resurfaced between 1795 and 1816.
Notable leaders included Jagannath Singh, Shyam Ganjan, Subla Singh, Dubraj, and Durjan Singh.
The revolt under Durjan Singh in 1798 was particularly significant; it was brutally suppressed by the British.
Some historians prefer the term "Revolt of the Jungle Mahal" instead of "Chuar Uprising."
