The arrival of the Portuguese in India marked the beginning of European expansion in South Asia. This historic era began when Vasco da Gama reached Calicut in 1498, establishing the first direct sea route between Europe and India and fundamentally reshaping global trade. Over time, the Portuguese aggressively expanded their influence by developing fortified ports, monopolizing critical spices, and establishing a strong naval presence in the Indian Ocean. Their arrival introduced a new phase of political rivalry, maritime conflict, and commercial competition among European powers in Mughal India. Although their influence eventually declined, the Portuguese left a lasting cultural, architectural, and maritime legacy in India, shaping its future colonial history.
