Medieval India witnessed transformative political, cultural and military developments that reshaped the subcontinent. The period begins with the Tripartite Struggle involving the Palas, Pratiharas and Rashtrakutas for control of Kannauj, laying the foundation for regional power centres. This era was followed by the emergence of powerful South Indian empires such as the Cholas, known globally for maritime influence. The next major shift occurred with the Turkish–Afghan invasions under Mahmud of Ghazni and Muhammad Ghori, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate. The Sultanate marked a new administrative and cultural phase, influencing Indian society profoundly. The later period saw the rise of powerful regional kingdoms like the Rajputs, Vijayanagara Empire and Deccan Sultanates, shaping regional identities. The greatest imperial phase began with the formation of the Mughal Empire, which reached its zenith under rulers such as Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb. Following Aurangzeb’s rule, the Mughal decline paved the way for Marathas, Sikhs and Jats to emerge as dominant regional powers. The arrival of Vasco da Gama in 1498 marked the beginning of European involvement, eventually leading to long-term colonial expansion in India.
