The early medieval period in India witnessed the emergence of powerful regional kingdoms, as central authority weakened after the decline of the Delhi Sultanate. The era began with the rise of several independent dynasties such as the Rajputs in North India and the consolidation of power in Gujarat and Malwa. The Deccan region emerged as a major political center during the late medieval era. The rise of the Bahmani Sultanate laid the foundation for administrative and cultural developments, later carried forward by the Deccan Sultanates after its fragmentation. Reformers like Mahmud Gawan strengthened administrative efficiency, while figures such as Malik Ambar played a decisive role in resisting Mughal expansion and influencing Maratha ascendancy. The Mughal emperor Akbar’s Deccan campaigns intensified imperial involvement in the south, shaping the power dynamics of the subcontinent.
