The Ural mountains in Eastern Europe are famous for iron ore, while the sedimentary strata of the lower Himalayan mountains provide the raw materials for cement. In the Rockies of North America, commercial extraction targets precious metals like gold, zinc, copper, and silver.
The story of mountainous regions is one of perpetual adaptation. From the terrace farming of the Himalayas to the mineral-rich Rockies and the earthquake-resistant Kath-kuni homes, humans have learned to thrive within the limits of their environment.
